2017 Massachusetts Truck Driving Championships
For the 3rd straight year NETTTS of North Andover, MA held the Massachusetts Truck Driving Championships. The top CDL drivers from across Massachusetts gathered on Sunday, June 4th to compete head-to-head and find out which truck drivers will move on to compete in the National Truck Driving Championship held later this year in Orlando, FL. This year 40 drivers, whose careers span from almost exactly 1 year, to a 1972 NETTTS Somers campus graduate, tested their skills to determine who are the best truck drivers in the state.
The competition evaluated drivers in three key areas: Written test, Pre-trip inspection and the Driving course. Scoring for this competition is based on time as well as accuracy, so that means problem solving skills are a must. The driver from each class with the highest combined score of these three areas is eligible to move on to the National Championships:
- 3 Axle Van: Brian Singelais, Frito-Lay
- 4 Axle Van: William Colantuone, FedEx
- 5 Axle Van: John Forgione, A. Duie Pyle
- Flatbed: James Cugini, Stop & Shop
- Straight: Ricky Costin, FedEx Express
- Sleeper: Roland Bolduc, FedEx Express
- Tanker: William Tarush, Stop & Shop
- Twins: Richard Gray, FedEx Freight
- Step Van: Kevin Burke, FedEx Express
- Student Driver Class: Thomas Carvalho, NETTTS
2017 was the first year that the Student Driver Class was introduced to this event and it certainly proved to be the highlight of the day. To qualify the driver must hold a valid CDL A or B, have received their Commercial Driver’s License in 2017 and not yet be employed as a driver. Tom Carvalho, a recent NETTTS graduate not only won Student Driver Class, but scored the highest mark of all 40+ drivers on the Alley Dock problem with a perfect 50 points!
All in all it was an exciting day of the best of the best Massachusetts truck drivers testing their skills and competing for this years title.
