Staff Spotlight: Bridgeport Job Placement Director, Jayson Chavis
Jayson is the Director of Career Services here at NETTTS in Bridgeport, CT, and he works with students to help them achieve their career goals. The Job Placement team starts by helping each student become job ready. This means learning how to write a resume, finding out where to apply and how to prepare for a job interview. His team also works with local, regional and over the road (OTR) trucking companies to help connect them with students and graduates that may be a good fit for what they are looking for.
What is it you like the most about working in the Job Placement team?
“I’ve worked in several departments here at NETTTS but Career Services is what I really love. We get to engage with the students and help them through the full process, and to achieve the ultimate goal of what they are here for.“
How do you feel when you see that one of the students just passed their CDL road test?
“It’s great. Especially when you see that it’s one of the guys that maybe had some struggles along the way or difficulties getting here because of their situation. I know at that point once they’ve got their license and are on their way that their life is going to change. This actually happened to me yesterday where I was on the phone with a graduate who had called to thank me for referring him to one place, and at the same time I was getting a text message from another guy who was literally in tears because he had finally gotten hired from the place he really wanted to go. It’s an awesome feeling.”
How do you help students to achieve their goal?
“From the start we meet with students and explain to them what we do. We’ll go over a pre-employment application and show them how to fill one out. They are a bit different from a typical application and really help students get comfortable and prepped for when they will be completing actual job applications down the line. We also set up presentation events for recruiters from different trucking companies to come to the campus and talk with students in the classroom about what they do“
What is most important when matching students with potential driving jobs?
“Getting to know the students and their specific background is incredibly important. Some companies want to know more about driving records where other companies want to know more about a students past. We understand the standards these companies have and encourage students to apply to the ones that match with their background, the type of work they want to do, and the overall direction they want to go. We help them with this throughout their whole time here at school–even before they’re out in the driving field.”
How about 2 truths and a lie?
1. I love Audi’s
2. Spaghetti is my favorite food
3. I used to climb roof’s to install Direct TV
What’s the best advice anyone has ever given you?
“Don’t make excuses, just make it happen. Obstacles will always get in your way. You’ve just got to figure out the next step to get around it.”
