2016 Driver Safety Week: October 16-22

This year, October 16th – 22nd, brings us The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s annual: Operation Safe Driver Week. Law enforcement agencies across North America will elevate their traffic safety enforcement and education, while primarily focusing on unsafe driving by Commercial Motor Vehicle operators, as well as car drivers.

The objective of this event is to help reduce the number of incidents involving trucks, buses and cars due to unsafe driving behaviors. While enforcement is on the lookout for any unsatisfactory driving behavior, they will be focusing on six key violations:

  • 1. Distracted driving
  • 2. Speeding
  • 3. Improper lane change
  • 4. Failure to use a seat belt
  • 5. Failure to obey traffic control devices
  • 6. Following too closely

The 2015 Operation Safe Driver Week provided us with some valuable information. We learned that more than 21,000 vehicles were pulled over, which included just under 20,000 roadside inspections on commercial vehicles. Although there were many different citations and warnings given to the commercial driver force, I’ve narrowed the list down to the five most repetitive violations:

  • – Speeding
  • – Size and weight restrictions
  • – Using a handheld phone/distracted driving
  • – Failure to obey a traffic control device
  • – Failure to use a seat belt

Tell your drivers to remain vigilant, and as always, make safe driving habits a top priority to protect your safety record. If you feel that your fleet of drivers may be in need of retraining efforts the New England Tractor Trailer Training School (NETTTS) can help. For over 50 years we have been training CDL drivers and can help provide customized safety services, and the knowledge and expertise for your existing driver workforce. A full listing of programs can be found with our Company Training and ELDT training or by calling (800) 333-2888.
