Share the Road: tips for driving safely

The Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are busy traffic holidays as it is, but as winter storms popped up all across the nation, the American Trucking Association wanted to ensure that all motorists are practicing safe driving techniques so that everyone traveling is able to safely arrive at their travel destinations, no matter what the season.

Since 1986, The American Trucking Associations highway safety “Share the Road” program has partnered with state trucking associations, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and professional truck drivers to help make sure everyone on the road is as safe as can be.

These elite truck drivers have driven over a million accident-free miles, and offer some tips for driving in winter road conditions. Their suggestions are as simple as planning and knowing your route to prepare for lane changes and exits ahead of time, to keeping vehicles clean and snow free, and simply keeping your eyes on the road.

The Share the Road Highway Safety Tour stopped in Dayton, Ohio recently to talk about safely traveling during the holiday season. Special thanks goes out to Jet Express for hosting the media event and inviting the Dayton business and trucking community to participate. Highlights from this tour were featured on CBS and NBC.

In November, ABC’s 20/20 featured a segment called Trucking Isn’t a Job or a Career, It’s a Lifestyle’ A Trucker’s Story highlighting the life of a truck driver. They followed long-haul driver Loren West, out of Wisconsin, and learned what it is like to deal with traffic jams, blinding sun, freezing rain and road construction all day everyday as part of normal every day life.

In 15 months of driving, West logged over 150,000 miles and crossed the borders of 44 states and four Canadian provinces. He shares his likes and dislikes of the lifestyle and talks dangers of the road.

West has decided to take a break from trucking and is is substitute teaching high school English and spending nights at home with his family – but he isn’t ruling out another stint behind the wheel.
