Report promotes investments in road improvements

A new report shows that investments in road improvements and freight shipping should be made by the U.S. government, according to findings announced in the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

The report, titled “Improving the Nation’s Freight Transportation System,” was praised by trucking officials who say more needs to be done to support the growing commercial truck industry.

“We’re pleased that it appears the movement of freight will be front and center in the next reauthorization, and we’re supportive of the panel’s recommendations that relate to highways,” Bill Graves, president and CEO of the American Trucking Associations said in a statement. “We also agree with the panel that Congress and the Administration must do something in the next re-authorization to address the looming shortfall in the Highway Trust Fund with sustainable revenue. “We have said, and continue to believe that the fuel tax is the most direct and sustainable way of addressing this shortfall rather than other, less traditional financing schemes.”
