President announces alternative fuel study for truck fleets

Lawmakers are talking up transportation related topics that could impact the commercial trucking industry. Truck officials and carriers are listening in closely and are hoping that these discussions will lead to better policies that will benefit the industry as a whole.

President Obama announced a plan to invest even more money into research that could help the truck industry transition to more alternative fuel use. The President delivered a speech where he announced his plan to establish a new U.S. Energy Security Trust that would set aside $2 billion that would be used to research the role of alternative fuels. The money would come from revenues from oil and natural gas production on domestic, publicly owned land over a 10-year period.
The commercial truck industry has grown in its role of alternative fuels, but diesel remains the largest source. However, the price of diesel has grown over the past few years, and that has presented a challenge to carriers looking to ship even more tonnage. The President said he would like to see a partnership developed with the private sector to adopt natural gas and other types of alternative-fuel vehicles in truck fleets.

National lawmakers also discussed several transportation related topics, including truck size limits, electronic logs and hours or service requirements for drivers.

Hours of service regulations were also looked at by the House committee, including a request by Rep. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., who asked that recently approved enforcement standards be pushed back, giving truck officials more time to comply with the changes in the law.
