Importance of trained drivers with safe habits
America’s top commercial truck carriers are looking for drivers with professional CDL training, as well as common sense and understand the importance of safe driving.
According to the National Safety Council (NSC), 23 percent of all collisions in the United States involved mobile phone usage. Using a mobile phone while driving a commercial truck is banned in most states, but this study included those drivers using hands-free devices. The NSC also reports that searching for objects, personal grooming and other distracting tasks are more common habits for those involved in collisions than those who are not.
The study also found that top distracted commercial drivers were talking on mobile phones 29 times more than the rest of the drivers as well as 19 times more texting than the rest of the drivers. This shows a habitual pattern with top distracted drivers leading to risky driving behaviors.
Receiving professional CDL training is an important first step towards driver safety and carriers are looking for drivers they know have been properly trained to operate a commercial truck. However, carriers are also looking for applicants who display safe driving habits and understand the importance of staying focused when behind the wheel of a truck.
